Distance: 36.31miles

I ended up going to both Longford and Roscommon today. This slight change to the original plans was due to us desperately trying to find WiFi. In the end we did but it was at an alternative camp site further from Roscommon.

At Longford Tourist Information I met Anna Delaney who kindly signed my map and gave me loads of good advice on local things to see.

Unfortunately due to Darcy having a field day in the puddles at Lough Rynn (see photo below) Beccy and Darcy didn’t make it to Longford Tourist Information to get all the info. Anna has on the local area. We will have to come back again some time.

An example of people’s generosity, Beccy met a man at Lough Rynn campsite and after a wee chat he gave us 20Euro sponsorship. Thanks to that man (we didn’t get his name).

Darcy just about to fall over
I met a lovely lady called Patsy Burke at Roscommon Tourist Information who also happed to be the Secretary of Roscommon Branch of The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland. Patsy thanks for ringing through to the camp site (hotel next to the campsite) to see if it had WiFi.

Beccy (+bump) and Darcy at Carrick-on-Shannon marina

Whilst setting myself up for a photo at Mohill welcome sign Kieran O’Beirne (who was tending his front garden) approached me asking if I would like my photo taken. He not only took my photo but also sponsored me 20Euro. Kieran thank you very much.

He also suggested I call in to “Leitrim Association of People with Disabilities” ( Station Road, Mohill) who have a number of Multiple Sclerosis suffers on their books. This wasn’t the only MS connection, as I later found out the founder of LAPWD Marie McGuinness suffers from MS herself. Marie the best of luck to you and LAPWD in the future.

Today I had the challenge of cycling mile after mile on stone chips on the side of the road. It’s a little bit like ice skating for a bike, one wrong move and you are on your back. It is either learn how to “stone chip skate” or be flattened by a vehicle passing at 60mph. It has kept me focused.

HELLO …We are still alive!

River Shannon (Lanesborough)

Firstly, thank you very much to everyone who has sponsored me so far. At the moment the sponsorship monies total is at 1,583.76 pounds (including gift aid).  Brilliant thank you very much. BUT I am keen to raise more. If there are any more people interested in helping Multiple Sclerosis Society and Leonard Cheshire Disability feel free to sponsor me via the link on this web page or http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/cycletourofireland

Secondly, sorry for the lack of updates on the web site. I have had a serious lack of WiFi connection. You will now see I have added a few blogs on our travels to N.Ireland (via Conwy, Liverpool & Dublin) and the first stage of the sponsored cycle (I was planning to upload all three stages completed so far but ran out of time.....we needed to go to sleep).

Also Niall has informed me (via Virgin Money Giving web site) a sweep stake has been set up in the office on how many punctures I will get. Now I think this is poor form to all the people involved (I can guess who these people are)….…….BUT it did make me laugh. I was considering giving an update on the number of punctures so far but I really think the participants should part with a load of sponsorship money (Niall has set a very good example to you all). Part with a load of sponsorship money and I will give you an update.

Thanks for all your support, it has helped me keep the pedals turning.

At Drumkeeran (approx. 67 miles) I meet up with my Support Team (Beccy +bump, Darcy in the camper Van) for a well needed break and food to recharge the battery. Recharged I peddled on to Sligo and the camp site beyond.

 Distance: 98 miles
A few pictures from the trip below

Going into Co.Fermanagh & Enniskillen

At Enniskillen I had a flying visit into Fermanagh Tourist Information Centre were I met Louise Dolan who kindly signed my tour map. Also took the opportunity to introduce her to the Cycle Tour of Ireland web site.

Made it to Sligo

Arlene Wilkins at Sligo Tourist Information Centre. While Beccy and Darcy were getting food reserves (pasta, pasta and more pasta) Arlene kindly contacted Strandhill Camp Site and confirmed they had availability for one night.

So much for GPS system, the connections between the phone and charge broke half way through stage 01.  Back to paper.

Cyce Tour Itinerary + Picture for Papers

Cycle tour itinerary

A few words from Beccy & Darcy (+ bump)

Beccy + bump & Darcy
I think Beccy put the challenge into perspective with the e-mail she sent out before we set off on our travels:

Hi all,

Well most of you know that Ian, Darcy and I are just about to head off to Ireland for our month tour of the emerald isle.

For those of you who don't know, Ian is embarking on a huge challenge - to cycle to every county town in Ireland (all 32 of them!) covering 1500 miles in 21 days - that's averaging 70 miles a day with some days covering more than 100 miles. Plus the hardest bit of all (for me to get my head around) is he is doing almost all of it by himself (fingers crossed Michael Pennance will be joining Ian for Stages 16 to 19....Tullamore to Armagh). I'd drive myself crazy but he is very determined. It's not an organised tour he is joining, he has spent hours in the evenings planning it all himself. And, if it were me, I'd ride the flatter bits but oh no, it's his challenge and he has chosen to cycle really hard terrain - partly as a personal challenge but more, so that Darcy and I can enjoy remote campsites and enjoy a sightseeing tour of Ireland. We're his support team in the campervan!

So you may ask, is this all for fun? Well no, Ian is raising money and awareness for MS. His Mum has suffered / lived with MS since Ian was born and she is a complete inspiration for him. Life is getting tougher for her and as the years go on, the support she gets from the Omagh branches of national charities such as the Leonard Cheshire Society and the MS Society is becoming more and more vital for her to enjoy life and remain living in her own home.  Ian wants to give something back to them to say thank you for all the support that they give his Mum, support that he can't give on an daily basis due to the distance of her living in Omagh and him being in London. It's kind of a thank you as well to all her friends who support her constantly even though many of them have their own family commitements and health problems.

You can follow his energetic progress (and Darcy & my 'less-energetic' progress) over the next month on the blog below. It has a link on to it to Virgin Money for financial support you might like to give - any amount is much much appreciated. Ian hasn't set a target, as every single penny donated will be divided between the two charities. He is funding the whole tour and even Virgin Money's cut (yes all these sites take a cut!) himself so you can rest assured that whatever you pledge, 100% goes to the cause.

(if you get a random questionnaire come up, just close it down and retype the url without www then it will work).

Thank you all very much in advance! If any of you feel the urge to promote the site via your social network sites that would be much appreciated (Janey!), as I am useless with Facebook!!!! Also, if any of you are overseas and are unable to use Virgin Money site online, you can just email us your contribution and we can track it seperately as an offline donation.

Thank you very very much indeed - we'll be in touch at the end of the tour (if I don't give birth in the outback of Connemara before then!!!).
